- To use, you will need to roughen up first. One of the easier, and most used techniques is to use a metal hole saw and drag across the screen, on both sides, until uniformly rough. If the screen is smooth, the algae will have a hard time taking root. You want it to be rough. Other methods would be to roughen up with a saw blade. In any method used, you will want to use the tool by hand, not in a drill or saw....
